In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, the Russian military has executed a large-scale strike on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure. The Russian Defense Ministry announced that the attack involved high-precision, long-range air and sea-based weapons, including unmanned aerial vehicles, targeting facilities crucial to Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. According to the Ministry, the strike successfully hit all assigned targets, including two electronic warfare stations and four field ammunition depots over the past 24 hours.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized the assault as one of the most extensive in recent times, stating that Russia launched over 100 missiles and approximately 100 drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as a “combined strike,” highlighting the severe damage inflicted on the energy sector. Despite the extensive destruction, efforts are underway to restore the affected facilities.
The Ukrainian government-run Ukrinform news agency reported that explosions were detected in several major cities across Ukraine. The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, along with Dnipro, Kropyvnytsky, Vinnytsia, Kryvyi Rih, and Kharkiv, were hit during the assault. The Ukrainian Air Force indicated that Russia deployed multiple groups of combat drones and cruise missiles in the attack, utilizing eleven Tu-95MC strategic bombers and six Tu-22M3 long-range supersonic bombers.
The attack came as no surprise to Ukrainian authorities, who had been anticipating a major Russian missile assault. Last week, the US Embassy had issued a warning about an elevated risk of attacks surrounding Ukrainian Independence Day, which was observed on Saturday.
Kyiv’s military administration reported that nearly 15 missiles and 15 drones targeting the capital were intercepted and downed. Both Russia and Ukraine have maintained that their respective attacks aim to undermine the other’s military capabilities, with each side denying any deliberate targeting of civilian areas.
As the conflict continues, the significant damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure raises concerns about the country’s ability to maintain essential services amidst ongoing hostilities. The international community watches closely as both sides navigate the escalating military engagements and their implications for the region’s stability.
