India captain Rohit Sharma shared insights into his approach to leadership following India’s impressive 7-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the Kanpur Test match. Despite rain delays that washed away more than two and a half days of play, India managed to pull off a remarkable win, with Rohit Sharma’s aggressive yet calculated approach playing a key role in the team’s success.
In a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on October 2, Rohit Sharma explained that India’s aggressive mindset in Test cricket stems from a combination of their batting, bowling, and field positioning. Speaking after the match, he emphasized that “aggression is all about your actions, not about my reactions,” and described how the team’s strategy came to fruition on Day 4 of the Test when they bowled out Bangladesh quickly and chased down the target with an impressive run rate of over 8 runs per over.
Rohit Sharma praised the efforts of the Indian bowlers, particularly Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin, for setting the tone early on the decisive day. He acknowledged that the team took calculated risks in pursuit of a result, even though the match could have swung either way. “I know the result could have gone either way, but I was okay with it,” Rohit Sharma said, noting that both the coaching staff and players were united in their aggressive approach.
Reflecting on his captaincy, Rohit Sharma emphasized the importance of adaptability and making decisions confidently. He acknowledged that not every decision will go as planned, but he stressed the need to back his instincts and trust his judgment. “There are a lot of decisions that you have to take on the field. Not every decision will go your way, but you have to back it and use your experience,” Rohit Sharma explained.
In addition to praising India’s bowling and batting efforts, Rohit Sharma highlighted the team’s exceptional fielding performance, noting that they successfully caught 23 out of the 24 opportunities that came their way during the match. He singled out the sharpness of the fielders, particularly in the slips, where players had to react quickly to difficult catches. “It may look easy on television, but it is not,” Rohit Sharma said, lauding the efforts of the team and their fielding coach Dilip.
Rohit Sharma concluded by reflecting on the team’s progress and emphasizing that India’s success came from a clear plan, collective effort, and a brave, aggressive approach that ultimately delivered a memorable victory.
