Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has expressed strong support for India’s recent military action under Operation Sindoor, aimed at targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation followed a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. Rishi Sunak’s endorsement of India’s actions comes amid growing tensions between India and Pakistan and a more cautious approach from the current Labour government in the UK.
Rishi Sunak’s Strong Statement on India’s Right to Act
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rishi Sunak emphasized that no nation should be expected to tolerate terrorist attacks originating from foreign soil. He firmly stated, “India is justified in striking terrorist infrastructure. There can be no impunity for terrorists.” This statement stands in contrast to the more diplomatic stance of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his government, who have called for de-escalation and dialogue between the two countries. While Rishi Sunak’s comments were more aligned with India’s position, Starmer’s remarks urged both nations to engage in talks and reduce tensions.
Terror Attacks and UK’s Concern for De-escalation
Foreign Secretary David Lammy also echoed concerns about the growing conflict, stressing the importance of restraint from both sides. Lammy warned that further escalation would benefit no one and called for continued efforts towards peaceful dialogue and civilian protection. His comments reflect the UK government’s commitment to reducing the risk of a broader conflict, despite the recent military actions.
India, on its part, has justified the strikes under Operation Sindoor as a proportional and non-escalatory response to dismantling terrorist launchpads used by groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that the strikes were necessary, given Pakistan’s failure to take concrete action against the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack.
The attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in recent years. Terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists, resulting in 26 fatalities. India has maintained that the operation was essential to prevent future attacks and to safeguard its citizens.
