Yoga guru Ramdev and his associate Acharya Balkrishna have issued a renewed apology in prominent newspapers, addressing misleading advertisements for Patanjali’s medicinal products. This latest apology comes in response to criticism from the Supreme Court regarding the size and visibility of their previous apology.
In the published advertisement, Ramdev and Balkrishna expressed their “unconditional apology” on behalf of themselves and Patanjali Ayurved for failing to comply with the directives of the Supreme Court of India. They acknowledged the mistake in publishing misleading advertisements and pledged to prevent such errors from recurring in the future.
The Supreme Court had raised concerns during a contempt hearing about the size of the apology compared to Patanjali’s full-page advertisements. Ramdev and Balkrishna informed the court that they had issued unqualified apologies in 67 newspapers and were prepared to release additional advertisements expressing remorse.
Responding to the court’s query on the timing and scale of the apology, the bench emphasized the importance of ensuring that the apology is easily readable and not disproportionately small. It instructed Patanjali to compile the advertisements and present them to the court for examination.
This recent development follows earlier instances where Ramdev and Balkrishna had tendered unconditional apologies before the Supreme Court for misleading advertisements, particularly regarding the efficacy of products like Coronil during the Covid-19 pandemic. The court had previously directed Patanjali to cease all advertisements claiming to treat ailments specified in the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.
In response to the Supreme Court’s admonition, Patanjali Ayurved submitted an affidavit expressing regret and clarifying that its intent was to promote healthy living rather than disparage modern medicine. This move aligns with previous directives from the court urging Patanjali to refrain from making unsubstantiated claims.
In November 2023, the Supreme Court had directed Patanjali to halt misleading claims and advertisements targeting the modern medical system, with the company assuring compliance with the court’s instructions.
