The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced Raghav Chadha as its new leader in the Rajya Sabha, replacing Sanjay Singh, who is presently in jail due to his involvement in the Delhi liquor policy case. This decision was confirmed by the AAP leadership in a letter addressed to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, citing health concerns as the reason for Singh’s absence.
According to several media reports, the Rajya Sabha secretariat has formally received the AAP’s letter nominating Raghav Chadha as its floor leader. The letter is currently under review by the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha for implementation.
Raghav Chadha, one of the youngest members of the Rajya Sabha, will now lead the AAP’s contingent of 10 MPs in the Upper House. It is noteworthy that the AAP holds the fourth-largest representation in the Rajya Sabha, following the BJP, the Congress, and the TMC.
It is pertinent to note that, earlier on December 4 only, Raghav Chadha’s reinstatement as an MP has been made after his suspension on August 11 during the monsoon session, which was prompted by complaints related to a ‘breach of privilege’. The allegations were linked to Chadha not obtaining consent from five Rajya Sabha MPs before including their names in a select committee. His suspension was revoked by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, following a motion moved by BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao.
