In a historic moment for the Middle East’s technology sector, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, inaugurated Web Summit Qatar 2024 on February 26. Held at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC), the four-day event marks the region’s debut hosting of the world’s largest technology event.

Attended by numerous ministers, senior officials, and dignitaries from Qatar and the region, along with representatives of local and international enterprises and startups, Web Summit Qatar 2024 commenced with a vision for innovation. Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the significance of hosting such a prestigious event, underscoring Qatar’s track record of hosting major global gatherings.
Investment in Tech Ecosystem
During his opening address, the Prime Minister announced a landmark USD 1 billion investment by the Qatar Investment Authority in venture capital funds. Under the directive of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, this strategic investment aims to support local and regional entrepreneurs, fostering innovation and technological advancement, the Qatari Prime Minister informed.
Launch of ‘Startup Qatar’
In tandem with the investment initiative, Sheikh Mohammed highlighted Invest Qatar’s recent launch of ‘Startup Qatar’, a comprehensive online platform offering support and opportunities to startups. This initiative provides startups with access to funding support services, incubation programs, government grants, and networking events, streamlining the path for budding entrepreneurs.

Reflecting on the evolving technological landscape, the Prime Minister emphasized the elimination of barriers to entry and participation, ushering in a new era of possibilities. With access to significant GDP and a large population within a six-hour flight radius, Qatar stands poised to drive meaningful progress in the tech sector.
