The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is optimistic about the possibility of sending a contingent of 35 athletes to the upcoming Paris Olympics, signaling a significant increase from the 26 athletes sent in 2021.
AFI President Adille Sumariwala revealed the federation’s expectations during a press conference at the National Federation athletics meet held at the Kalinga Stadium. Adille Sumariwala stated that 20 athletes have already qualified directly for the Olympics, including relay teams, with additional qualifiers expected through rankings. The goal is to have 35 athletes qualified by the end of the qualification period.
Adille Sumariwala addressed the participation of World and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra in the Federation meet, explaining that Neeraj Chopra’s absence from the mandatory inter-state meet in Panchkula was due to scheduling conflicts with the Paris Diamond League. Neeraj Chopra received special permission to participate in the Paris event.
The AFI president expressed confidence in the Indian 4x400m mixed relay team’s chances of qualifying for Paris at the upcoming Asian Relays in Bangkok.
While refraining from making medal predictions, Adille Sumariwala noted that several Indian athletes are in contention for medals at the Paris Olympics.
Javelin thrower Kishore Jena, reflecting on his recent performance at the Doha Diamond League, acknowledged technical issues that affected his performance but expressed determination to rectify them and perform better in future events.
Kishore Jena also expressed excitement at the prospect of competing alongside Neeraj Chopra in the Olympics, emphasizing the mutual motivation they provide each other. He expressed confidence in his training and aspirations for winning a medal at the Olympics.
