Highlights
  • Punjab National Bank has reduced the daily ATM cash withdrawal limit to ₹25,000 for select debit cards, effective April 1, 2026.
  • The move aims to improve transaction security and promote digital payment methods such as UPI and mobile banking.

Punjab National Bank (PNB) has announced a reduction in the daily ATM cash withdrawal limit for certain debit cards, with the revised limits set to take effect from April 1, 2026. The public sector bank has trimmed the withdrawal ceiling by up to 50 percent for selected debit card variants, a move aimed at improving transaction security and encouraging greater use of digital payment channels.

According to the bank’s updated guidelines, customers using some specific PNB debit cards will now be able to withdraw a smaller amount of cash per day compared with the earlier permitted limit. The change applies primarily to RuPay Classic and certain other basic debit card categories, which are commonly issued to savings account holders.

Under the revised rules, customers holding affected cards will be allowed to withdraw a maximum of ₹25,000 per day from ATMs, whereas the earlier withdrawal cap for these cards was ₹50,000 per day. This effectively reduces the daily cash withdrawal limit by half for these particular card types.

The new limits will apply to both PNB ATMs and other bank ATMs across India. However, the bank has clarified that the change will only affect certain debit card categories, while premium debit cards may continue to have higher withdrawal limits depending on the card type and account profile.

Debit cards affected by the revised limit

The reduction mainly applies to entry-level debit cards issued by Punjab National Bank. These cards typically come with basic banking features and are widely used by customers for routine ATM withdrawals and point-of-sale transactions.

Some of the debit cards expected to be affected include:

  • RuPay Classic Debit Card
  • RuPay Platinum Debit Card (select variants)
  • Certain legacy PNB debit cards issued under earlier product structures
  • Customers using these cards will need to adjust their ATM withdrawal plans accordingly once the new limits take effect.

PNB has advised customers to check their card variant and updated withdrawal limits through the bank’s official website, mobile banking application, or by contacting their nearest branch.

Why the bank reduced the limit

Banks periodically revise ATM withdrawal limits based on security concerns, transaction patterns, and the increasing adoption of digital banking services. By reducing withdrawal limits on some debit cards, financial institutions aim to minimize potential losses in case of card theft, fraud, or unauthorized transactions.

Punjab National Bank has also been promoting digital payment methods such as mobile banking, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and card-based transactions at merchant outlets. Encouraging customers to rely more on digital transactions is part of a broader strategy across India’s banking sector to reduce dependence on cash.

At the same time, the bank has not changed limits for many higher-tier debit cards, which are generally issued to customers with premium accounts or higher transaction requirements. These cards often allow larger daily withdrawals and additional benefits.

Customers who frequently withdraw higher amounts from ATMs may consider upgrading their debit card to a premium variant if eligible. Alternatively, they can withdraw cash over multiple days or use digital payment options where possible.

Punjab National Bank remains one of India’s largest public sector banks, serving millions of customers across the country through its extensive branch network, ATM infrastructure, and digital banking platforms. The revised withdrawal policy is expected to affect a significant number of cardholders once implemented from April 2026.
