In the aftermath of the tragic incident in Pune where a 17-year-old boy fatally struck two motorcycle-borne software engineers with his Porsche car, the Pune Police await a crucial decision on whether the teen will be tried as an adult in the case. Following the cancellation of his bail by a juvenile court, he has been remanded to a Children’s Observation Centre until June 5.
Pune Police Commissioner, Amitesh Kumar, disclosed that a review application has been submitted before the Juvenile Justice Board advocating for the juvenile to be treated as an adult during the trial process. Despite the filing, the awaited decision on the matter is yet to be communicated.
The teenager’s lawyer, Prashant Patil, highlighted that during the 15-day remand period, the juvenile is set to undergo counseling by a psychiatrist or psychologist, as directed by the Juvenile Justice Board.
Furthermore, the teen faces a new charge under section 185 for driving under the influence of alcohol, as per the proceedings of a recent hearing. The legal proceedings also extend to the teen’s father and employees of Hotel Black Club, who have been remanded in police custody.
The legal intricacies continue to unfold, with the police registering FIRs against various individuals under pertinent sections of the law. Notably, the accused minor’s father is accused of facilitating the underage driving and alcohol consumption.
Amidst the legal proceedings, a political dispute has emerged, with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemning Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s attempts to politicize the incident. In response, Rahul Gandhi criticized the differential treatment of justice based on socio-economic status.
Meanwhile, the focus remains on the tragic loss of Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, with questions arising about the circumstances leading to the accident and the subsequent handling of the case by authorities.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about accountability, justice, and societal inequalities, resonating beyond the confines of Pune.
