A peaceful Sunday afternoon turned into horror for scores of families when a narrow pedestrian bridge over the Indrayani River in Pune’s Talegaon area collapsed, sending more than 100 people crashing into the fast-moving waters. At least four people died and over 50 were injured in the tragic incident, which has raised serious concerns over infrastructure safety in the region. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic, fear, and survival that they will never forget.
Eyewitnesses recall horror and survival
According to eyewitnesses, the old bridge was overcrowded at the time of the collapse. Swapnil Kollam, who survived the fall along with his family, said, “There were more than 150-200 people on the bridge, but at the spot where it broke, over 50 were standing. It’s God’s grace that my family is safe.” Another witness, Nikhil Kollam, described it as nothing short of a miracle. Trembling as he spoke, he said, “It is Lord Ram’s grace that we are safe. Today is the rebirth of me and my family.”
The bridge gave way at approximately 3:15 PM, causing a section of the structure to snap. The crowd, caught off guard, screamed in terror as people fell into the river below. Local authorities and emergency responders quickly arrived to begin rescue operations.
Authorities confirm casualties and injuries
District Collector Jitendra Dudi confirmed that four people had died and 51 others were injured. The deceased were identified as Chandrakant Salve, Rohit Mane, and Vihaan Mane, while the fourth victim remained unidentified. Dudi added that the injured have been admitted to various hospitals in the area, and search operations were still underway to ensure no one remained missing or trapped.
The tragic incident has prompted a wave of political reactions. The Congress party expressed deep sorrow and demanded accountability from those responsible for the collapse. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge called the tragedy distressing and avoidable, while Rahul Gandhi expressed sadness over the loss of lives. Congress leader Pawan Khera described the bridge collapse as heartbreaking and emphasized the need for legal action against those found negligent.
The incident has once again spotlighted the dire condition of public infrastructure and the urgent need for regular inspections and safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
