The investigation into a viral video allegedly depicting drug-related activities at a Pune bar has led to 14 arrests so far, as authorities ramp up efforts to uncover the truth.
The arrests include six waiters from Liquid Leisure Lounge (L3) on Fergusson College Road, Pune, conducted by the Maharashtra excise department. This follows earlier arrests of eight individuals, including bar personnel, after the establishment was found operating beyond legal hours.
The video in question circulated on social media purportedly shows patrons consuming substances resembling narcotics at the bar. Those arrested earlier have been remanded in police custody till June 29 to facilitate further investigation.
The prosecution highlighted that the accused used social media to attract patrons for consumption of narcotics, alcohol, and cigarettes, prompting authorities to seek out additional leads, including identifying individuals seen in the video, including a minor.
Further infractions were uncovered during the probe, with reports indicating the bar operated until 5 am, well past the permissible closing time of 1:30 am for bars and pubs in Pune. Consequently, the state excise department suspended the bar’s license and arrested six additional staff members for violating liquor stocking regulations under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act.
Pune Commissioner of Police, Amitesh Kumar, confirmed the arrests and emphasized that legal action has been initiated against the bar’s owners and staff for flouting regulations. The individuals detained face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Maharashtra Police Act, Maharashtra Prohibition Act, and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act.
Meanwhile, amid escalating tensions, a local outfit allegedly vandalized the bar premises, prompting swift condemnation and further law enforcement actions.
Additionally, Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol called for a comprehensive crackdown on narcotics in Pune, urging dedicated efforts to eliminate drug availability across colleges, pubs, hotels, and other suspicious locations.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities strive to address public concerns and uphold legal standards in the city.
