Preliminary results from the Maldives election indicate a decisive victory for President Mohamed Muizzu’s People’s National Congress (PNC), with the party winning 70 out of 93 parliamentary seats. This outcome, if confirmed, grants the PNC full control of parliament and signals a significant shift in the country’s geopolitical orientation towards China.
With the inclusion of three seats secured by allied parties, the PNC is poised to achieve a super majority. Official confirmation of the results is expected later today, following a formal ratification process, after which the new assembly is slated to assume office in early May.
In contrast, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who has been regarded as pro-India, experienced a substantial setback, securing only 15 seats compared to their previous 65-seat hold in the parliament.
Of the 41 female candidates who stood for election, only three were successful in securing seats, all of whom are affiliated with Mohamed Muizzu’s PNC.
The electoral outcome serves as a critical test for Mohamed Muizzu’s agenda to deepen economic cooperation with China, a direction he has pursued since winning the presidential elections last September. The PNC’s victory, in contrast to its limited representation in the outgoing parliament, is anticipated to facilitate the implementation of Muizzu’s policies.
The Maldives, a nation highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to its low-lying geography, faces significant challenges posed by rising sea levels. Mohamed Muizzu has proposed land reclamation and infrastructure development as measures to mitigate these risks, although environmentalists caution against potential exacerbation of flooding.
Additionally, Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has signaled a departure from the country’s previous “India First” policy, which has strained relations with New Delhi. Recent actions, including the awarding of infrastructure contracts to Chinese state-owned enterprises, indicate a pivot towards closer ties with China.
Opposition parties, while critical of Mohamed Muizzu’s government on various fronts, including foreign policy and the economy, were unable to secure significant electoral gains. The PNC managed to secure key seats in former MDP strongholds, consolidating its influence across the country.
Despite a slightly lower turnout compared to previous elections, the Maldives witnessed robust civic engagement, with voter participation recorded at 72.9 percent, reflecting the significance of the electoral process for the nation’s political landscape.
