Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed a special puja at Akshay Vat and Sangam in Prayagraj on Friday amid preparations for the Maha Kumbh 2025. The worship was conducted not only for its religious significance but also with the intent of promoting global welfare, world peace, and preserving the sanctity of Sanatan Dharma. At the Sangam Nose, PM Modi, in the role of a yajman (host), performed an abhishek and worshiped with the sacred waters of the confluence. Following this, he visited the Akshay Vat, regarded as a symbol of protection for the holy city of Prayagraj.
The Akshay Vat is recognized as a symbol of India’s eternal virtue, spiritual energy, and the enduring legacy of Sanatan Dharma. PM Modi bowed before it, took a solemn vow, and lit a lamp to pray for the welfare of the world. He circumambulated the Akshay Vat, paying homage to its sanctity, and remarked that this site stands as a testament to India’s cultural and spiritual heritage. The Prime Minister also offered prayers at the Lete Hanuman Temple in Prayagraj and took a boat ride on the Sangam River, appreciating the religious significance of the city.
During his visit, PM Modi reviewed the preparations for Maha Kumbh 2025, inspecting the ongoing development work at the Sangam Corridor. He specifically assessed arrangements for providing smooth darshan (viewing) for devotees and directed officials to ensure that the millions of pilgrims attending the Kumbh face no inconvenience. The vision of PM Modi and the leadership of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were evident in the well-structured development of the Sangam Corridor and the Akshay Vat area.
According to ancient beliefs, the roots of the Akshay Vat are said to be home to Lord Brahma, the middle section to Lord Vishnu, and the upper part to Lord Shiva. It is also considered a fragment of the mythical Kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling tree) obtained during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). This sacred tree symbolizes the power and permanence of Sanatan Dharma, having endured adversities during the Mughal and British eras while maintaining its significance.
Historically, the Akshay Vat holds a special connection with Lord Rama. It is believed that while returning to Ayodhya after his victory over Lanka, Lord Rama viewed this sacred site from the Pushpak Viman. Even today, this location is said to evoke a sense of his divine presence. PM Modi’s worship at the Akshay Vat has reinstated its importance and is seen as a significant step towards reestablishing India as a global spiritual leader.
