Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Austria yesterday, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over four decades. The last such visit was by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1983.
During his stay in Vienna, PM Modi’s agenda includes meetings with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and Chancellor Nehammer. Discussions are expected to focus on enhancing bilateral relations and addressing key geopolitical challenges, with both leaders slated to engage with business leaders from India and Austria.
Highlighting the significance of the visit, officials underscored the mutual commitment to strengthening ties across various sectors. PM Modi is scheduled to interact with the Indian community in Vienna, emphasizing the role of shared democratic values, freedom, and the rule of law in fostering closer cooperation between the two nations.
In preparation for the visit, PM Modi reflected on the foundational values that underpin India-Austria relations, emphasizing their role in nurturing an enduring partnership. Notably, the Prime Minister had engaged with then-Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg during COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, further solidifying diplomatic exchanges.
Recently, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra highlighted Austria’s pivotal position in Central Europe, citing opportunities for collaboration in infrastructure, renewable energy, technology, startups, media, and entertainment sectors.
