President Droupadi Murmu has begun a six-day visit to her home state of Odisha, a tour that reflects a carefully balanced mix of religious observances, academic participation, cultural recognition and developmental outreach across multiple districts. Arriving in Bhubaneswar this evening, the President’s itinerary spans Khordha, Jajpur, Balasore, Puri and Mayurbhanj, underscoring both her constitutional responsibilities and her deep personal connection with the state where her public life and identity are rooted.

Religious Observances and Academic Engagements Across Coastal and Central Odisha

The opening phase of President Murmu’s visit is marked by a strong emphasis on spiritual traditions and academic institutions, reflecting the dual pillars of faith and education that continue to shape Odisha’s social fabric. Soon after her arrival in Bhubaneswar, preparations are set in motion for a series of engagements that take her through some of the state’s most revered religious sites and prominent centres of learning.

On the first full day of her tour, the President is scheduled to travel to Jajpur, a district of immense historical and religious significance in Odisha. Here, she will offer prayers at the Maa Biraja Temple, one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas in eastern India. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Biraja, holds a central place in Odisha’s spiritual heritage and attracts devotees from across the state and beyond. President Murmu’s visit to the shrine is expected to resonate deeply with local communities, many of whom view the temple as a symbol of cultural continuity and collective faith.

In Jajpur, the President will also perform rituals at Navi Gaya, a site associated with ancestral rites and religious ceremonies. Navi Gaya has long been considered an important destination for those performing pind daan and other rituals for departed ancestors, and the President’s presence there highlights the enduring relevance of traditional practices in contemporary public life. These religious engagements are not merely ceremonial but reflect a broader acknowledgment of Odisha’s deeply rooted spiritual traditions.

From Jajpur, President Murmu will proceed to Balasore, where she is scheduled to attend the 12th Convocation Ceremony of Fakir Mohan University as the Chief Guest. Named after Fakir Mohan Senapati, a towering figure in Odia literature and social reform, the university occupies a significant place in the state’s academic landscape. Addressing graduating students and faculty, the President is expected to emphasize the role of higher education in nation-building, innovation and social responsibility. Her participation in the convocation ceremony is likely to inspire students, particularly those from rural and underserved backgrounds, who see in her journey a powerful example of perseverance and achievement.

Later in the evening, the President will travel to Puri, one of India’s four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites, to offer prayers at the Shree Jagannath Temple. The temple, dedicated to Lord Jagannath, is not only a major religious centre but also a cultural symbol of Odisha’s identity. President Murmu’s darshan at the temple carries both spiritual and symbolic importance, reaffirming the temple’s central role in the religious life of the state. The visit is also expected to draw significant public attention, given the deep emotional bond that Odia people share with the Jagannath tradition.

Mayurbhanj Focus, Tribal Outreach and Developmental Initiatives

The latter half of President Murmu’s Odisha visit shifts focus to Mayurbhanj, her home district, and places a strong emphasis on tribal welfare, local development and community engagement. This segment of the tour holds particular emotional and political significance, as Mayurbhanj has played a formative role in shaping the President’s life and public journey.

On Wednesday, President Murmu will arrive in Mayurbhanj, beginning her engagements with the inauguration of a holiday home at Rairangpur. The facility is expected to boost local tourism and provide improved infrastructure for visitors, while also creating employment opportunities for residents of the region. Rairangpur, closely associated with the President’s early life, has seen gradual development over the years, and the inauguration of the holiday home is being viewed as a step towards enhancing the area’s economic and tourism potential.

The President will also visit a Girls’ Higher Secondary School in the district, an engagement that underscores her long-standing emphasis on education, particularly for girls. Interacting with students and educators, she is expected to highlight the transformative power of education in empowering young women and fostering inclusive growth. Her presence at the school carries special significance in a tribal-dominated district, where access to quality education has historically been limited and where role models like President Murmu hold immense inspirational value.

Another key highlight of her Mayurbhanj visit is the unveiling of the statue of tribal leader Bhanjbir Sunaram Soren. The event serves as an important act of cultural recognition, acknowledging the contributions of tribal leaders who played a role in social reform and community leadership. By honouring Bhanjbir Sunaram Soren, the President reinforces the importance of preserving tribal history and celebrating indigenous leadership within the broader national narrative.

In addition, President Murmu will inaugurate a sports complex in the district, reflecting a commitment to promoting sports and physical development among youth. The facility is expected to provide much-needed infrastructure for aspiring athletes in the region, offering opportunities for training and competition that were previously unavailable. Sports development has increasingly been viewed as a tool for social inclusion and youth engagement, and the inauguration aligns with broader national efforts to identify and nurture talent from grassroots levels.

On Thursday, the President will attend a special programme at the Rairangpur Jagannath Temple, further reinforcing the spiritual dimension of her visit to Mayurbhanj. The temple holds local significance and serves as a focal point for community gatherings and religious observances. Her participation in the programme is expected to strengthen the connection between cultural traditions and public leadership.

The same day, President Murmu is scheduled to visit Simlipal National Park, a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve and one of India’s most important wildlife habitats. Simlipal is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including endangered species and dense forest cover. The President’s visit highlights the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable development, particularly in ecologically sensitive and tribal-inhabited regions. It also draws attention to the need for balancing conservation efforts with the livelihoods and rights of local communities.

On the 6th of the month, the President will interact with tribal women and youth groups, an engagement that reflects her continued focus on grassroots empowerment. These interactions are expected to provide a platform for community members to share their experiences, challenges and aspirations directly with the Head of State. For many participants, the opportunity to engage with the President represents both recognition and encouragement, reinforcing the idea that their voices matter in the national discourse.

Following these interactions, President Murmu will return to Bhubaneswar to attend the Black Swan Summit India, an event that brings together thought leaders, policymakers and experts to discuss emerging challenges and transformative ideas. Her presence at the summit adds a national dimension to her Odisha visit, linking local engagements with broader discussions on governance, innovation and resilience.

The President is scheduled to conclude her Odisha tour on the 7th of the month, departing from Bhubaneswar for Chhattisgarh. The six-day visit, spread across diverse districts and themes, reflects a comprehensive engagement with the state, combining personal connection, constitutional duty and a forward-looking developmental vision.
