In a landmark diplomatic effort aimed at deepening India’s engagement with Europe, President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Slovakia on April 9 as part of her two-nation state visit. Her arrival marked the first official visit by an Indian President to Slovakia in nearly three decades, underscoring the growing significance of India’s ties with the Central European nation. Following her engagements in Portugal, Droupadi Murmu’s journey continued through Austria and culminated in the Slovak capital Bratislava, where she is set for a packed schedule of high-level meetings and strategic engagements.
Reviving Diplomatic Channels and Strategic Partnerships
During her brief two-day visit, President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to hold key discussions with Slovakia’s top leadership, including President Peter Pellegrini, Prime Minister Robert Fico, and National Council Speaker Richard Rasi. These meetings aim to inject fresh energy into India-Slovakia relations, which have historically seen limited high-level exchanges. The visit is expected to strengthen political momentum, particularly in trade, technology, and defense cooperation.
Beyond diplomacy, the visit carries strong symbolic value. President Droupadi Murmu’s presence in Bratislava highlights India’s commitment to engaging with smaller EU member states as part of its broader Europe strategy. Slovakia, a member of the European Union since 2004, has played a meaningful role in shaping India’s relationship with the EU, especially since the formal launch of the India-EU Strategic Partnership.
A major highlight of the visit will be President Droupadi Murmu’s tour of the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) manufacturing facility in Nitra, owned by India’s Tata Motors. This state-of-the-art plant, launched in 2018 with a €1.4 billion investment, is a significant symbol of Indian industrial presence in Europe. Her visit to the JLR plant underscores India’s growing global business footprint and aims to recognize the role of Indian companies abroad.
