The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) has undergone substantial changes in its operational framework, aimed at enhancing rural connectivity and development. In 2024, the Ministry of Rural Development has introduced key modifications to streamline the execution and maintenance processes of rural roads across India.
About the Scheme
Launched in 2000, PMGSY is a flagship scheme dedicated to connecting rural areas with well-paved roads, thereby reducing the gap between urban and rural infrastructure. Managed through Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Municipalities, the scheme entered its third phase in 2019 under the guidance of Union Minister for Rural Development, Narendra Singh Tomar.
Empowering Rural Communities
The primary objective of PMGSY is to improve the quality of life in rural areas by enhancing road connectivity. By repairing existing roads and constructing new ones, the scheme ensures smoother transportation, better access to essential services like healthcare and education, and increased economic opportunities for rural residents.
Data Insights
– Over 183,689 works have been cleared under PMGSY.
– These include 119,419 new connectivity projects and 64,270 upgradation works.
– A remarkable 170,074 road works have been completed, covering a total length of 708,786 kilometers.
– Currently, 13,615 road works are in progress, reflecting ongoing efforts to expand rural connectivity.
Maintenance and Funding Focus
Recognizing the importance of maintaining PMGSY roads, the Ministry emphasizes the necessity of adequate funding and maintenance contracts. States are required to allocate funds and enter into agreements with the Ministry to ensure proper upkeep of roads during their initial five-year maintenance period.
eMARG: Implementation
In a bid to monitor the maintenance of PMGSY roads efficiently, the Ministry has introduced an online platform called Electronic Maintenance of PMGSY roads (eMARG) across all states. This platform facilitates real-time tracking of maintenance activities during the Defect Liability Period (DLP) of five years.
PMGSY continues to play a vital role in transforming rural infrastructure and fostering socio-economic development across India.
