In a landmark decision aimed at accelerating India’s transition to renewable energy, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This ambitious scheme, with a substantial budgetary allocation of Rs. 75,021 crore, aims to facilitate the installation of rooftop solar panels in one crore households across the country. Launched on February 13, 2024, the scheme promises to provide eligible households with free electricity up to 300 units per month.
Financial Incentives and Subsidies
Under the PM-Surya Ghar scheme, eligible households can avail significant financial incentives. The scheme offers a Central Financial Assistance (CFA) covering 60% of the system cost for solar units up to 2 kW capacity. For systems ranging from 2 kW to 3 kW, the CFA covers 40% of the additional system cost, capped at 3 kW capacity. This translates into a subsidy of Rs. 30,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs. 60,000 for 2 kW systems, and up to Rs. 78,000 for systems of 3 kW capacity or higher, based on current benchmark prices.
Application and Implementation
To ensure seamless implementation, interested households can apply for subsidies through the dedicated National Portal at www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in. The portal provides comprehensive assistance, including information on system sizes, a benefits calculator, vendor ratings, and the selection of suitable vendors for installation. This initiative aims to empower households in making informed decisions regarding rooftop solar adoption.
Loan Facilities and Incentives
Additionally, households are eligible to access collateral-free, low-interest loans at approximately 7% interest rates for the installation of residential rooftop solar (RTS) systems up to 3 kW capacity. The interest rates are linked to prevailing Repo Rates, ensuring affordability and ease of financing for participants in the scheme.
Environmental Impact and Employment Generation
The PM-Surya Ghar initiative is poised to significantly enhance India’s solar energy capacity by an estimated 30 GW through residential rooftop installations. Over its projected 25-year lifespan, these systems are expected to generate approximately 1000 BUs of electricity, contributing to a reduction of about 720 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions. Furthermore, the scheme is anticipated to create around 17 lakh direct jobs across various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, installation, and maintenance, thereby boosting economic growth and employment.
Urban and Rural Integration
A Model Solar Village will be developed in each district across the country to serve as a demonstration model for the adoption of rooftop solar systems in rural areas. Urban Local Bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions will also receive incentives to promote RTS installations in their respective areas, fostering widespread adoption and integration of solar energy solutions.
Awareness Campaign and Public Engagement
Since its launch, the government has initiated a robust awareness campaign to educate and encourage households to participate in the PM-Surya Ghar scheme. By leveraging various communication channels and outreach programs, the campaign aims to maximize participation and ensure the scheme’s benefits reach every eligible household in India.
PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana represents a transformative initiative towards achieving India’s renewable energy targets and promoting sustainable development. By empowering households to harness solar power, the scheme not only promises substantial savings on electricity bills but also contributes significantly to environmental conservation and energy security. Through strategic implementation and widespread adoption, the government aims to create a cleaner, greener, and more resilient energy landscape for the future.
