Taiwan’s Labour Minister, Hsu Ming-chun, issued an apology on Tuesday for her recent comments regarding the recruitment of Indian migrant workers, following widespread backlash. The controversy arose after Hsu made remarks during an online talk show on February 29, suggesting that Taiwan’s Labour Ministry would prioritize recruiting Indian workers from northeastern India due to similarities in “skin color and dietary habits” with Taiwanese people.

Explaining the rationale behind the strategy, Hsu referenced assessments from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), highlighting that individuals from northeastern India, predominantly Christians, possess skills suitable for sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and farming. Taiwan and India had recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signaling an intention to expand India’s role as a source of migrant workforce for Taiwan.

Addressing a legislative hearing on Tuesday, Hsu expressed regret for her “inaccurate” choice of words, emphasizing that Taiwan’s labour policies prioritize equality and do not discriminate against any individuals, whether local or foreign workers.

The controversy prompted swift condemnation from within Taiwan’s political sphere, with Legislator Chen Kuan-ting of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party denouncing Hsu’s comments and reaffirming Taiwan’s commitment to respecting individuals regardless of race, culture, or religion.

Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) issued a statement apologizing for Hsu’s remarks, acknowledging that they were “not entirely appropriate.” The ministry expressed regret over the criticism received from various sectors of Taiwanese society, Indian friends, and international stakeholders. It vowed to conduct a thorough review of its actions and implement necessary improvements moving forward.

The statement emphasized Taiwan’s inclusive civil society and its respect for India’s diverse culture, affirming the commitment to fostering cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between the two nations. Taiwan pledged to strengthen cooperation and partnership with India, aiming to elevate bilateral relations to new heights.
