Meerut: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flag off the Meerut Metro services and inaugurate the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor during his visit to Uttar Pradesh today. The Prime Minister will arrive at the Nagar Namo Bharat Station in Meerut this afternoon, where he will formally launch the services and undertake a metro ride up to Meerut South Station.
During the visit, Narendra Modi will also inaugurate and dedicate to the nation multiple development projects valued at approximately ₹12,930 crore. The projects are expected to significantly boost infrastructure, connectivity, and economic growth in the region.
A key highlight of the visit is the dedication of the entire 82-kilometre-long Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor. With this inauguration, all remaining sections of India’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System will become operational. These include the 5-kilometre section between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, as well as the 21-kilometre stretch between Meerut South and Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh.
Designed with a maximum speed of 180 kilometres per hour, the Namo Bharat system represents India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System aimed at providing high-speed, efficient, and reliable intercity travel. The corridor is expected to transform daily commuting by connecting major urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut with Delhi at a significantly faster pace.
Sarai Kale Khan, the originating station of the corridor, is among the four Namo Bharat stations that will be commissioned as part of this inauguration. The full operationalisation of the corridor marks a major milestone in India’s urban transport infrastructure.
In another first-of-its-kind initiative, Narendra Modi will also inaugurate the Meerut Metro services operating between Meerut South and Modipuram. Notably, the Meerut Metro will run on the same infrastructure as the Namo Bharat trains, demonstrating an innovative model of integrated transit systems.
Meerut Metro is set to become India’s fastest metro system, with a maximum operational speed of approximately 120 kilometres per hour. The service is designed to cover the entire stretch in just 30 minutes, including all scheduled stoppages along the route. This is expected to substantially reduce travel time and enhance urban mobility within the city.
The seamless integration of the Namo Bharat RRTS and the Meerut Metro on shared infrastructure is being seen as a significant advancement in India’s transport planning. The model aims to provide high-speed regional connectivity alongside swift intra-city movement, thereby improving overall travel efficiency.
Officials state that this dual-use infrastructure will maximise resource utilisation while offering passengers flexible, reliable, and rapid transit options. The integrated system is expected to ease traffic congestion, lower travel costs, and reduce carbon emissions.
The projects being dedicated during the visit span multiple sectors, including transport, urban development, and regional infrastructure. The initiatives are expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity across western Uttar Pradesh.
Narendra Modi is also scheduled to address a public gathering in Meerut, where he is expected to highlight the government’s commitment to modernising transport networks and accelerating regional development.
The launch of the Namo Bharat Corridor and Meerut Metro services is being viewed as a transformative step toward strengthening connectivity between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, while simultaneously improving urban transportation within Meerut.
