On the occasion of World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the government’s dedication to preserving India’s rich biodiversity. Emphasizing the importance of wildlife conservation, PM Narendra Modi took to X to highlight the need for collective efforts to safeguard the planet’s diverse species.
“Today, on World Wildlife Day, let’s reiterate our commitment to protect and preserve the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Every species plays a vital role — let’s safeguard their future for generations to come!” he wrote. Acknowledging India’s contributions to global conservation efforts, he added, “We also take pride in India’s contributions towards preserving and protecting wildlife.”
In line with his commitment to conservation, PM Narendra Modi is visiting Sasan Gir in Gujarat, home to the last remaining population of Asiatic lions. His visit coincides with this year’s World Wildlife Day theme, ‘Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet,’ which highlights the necessity of sustainable funding and community participation in conservation initiatives.
During his visit, the Prime Minister will inaugurate a newly established veterinary hospital in Sasan Gir, aimed at improving healthcare for the region’s lion population. He will then return to Singh Sadan to chair a meeting of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL), discussing key strategies for wildlife conservation. Additionally, he will interact with women forest staff, promoting inclusivity and encouraging greater female participation in conservation efforts.
Gujarat has been at the forefront of lion conservation, implementing dedicated measures to protect and expand the habitat of Asiatic lions. Currently, these big cats inhabit nearly 30,000 square kilometers, spanning 53 talukas across nine districts of the state. To strengthen conservation efforts, the Gujarat government has established a National Referral Centre for Wildlife over a 20.24-hectare area in Junagadh.
The state has also introduced advanced facilities, including a high-tech wildlife monitoring centre and a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in Sasan Gir, ensuring better care for endangered species. Recognizing the crucial role of law enforcement in conservation, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi lauded the coordinated efforts of the Gujarat Police and Forest Department in safeguarding the state’s wildlife.
In 2024, the Gujarat government enhanced its conservation framework by recruiting 237 beat guards, including 162 men and 75 women, to strengthen surveillance in the Gir Protected Area. These efforts align with a broader strategy to not only protect Asiatic lions but also support the conservation of other endangered species in the region.
Further reflecting Gujarat’s commitment to wildlife preservation, the ‘Gir Samvad Setu’ initiative has successfully facilitated over 300 community engagement programs, addressing local concerns and raising awareness about conservation. Additionally, nine breeding centres have been set up to protect herbivorous species essential for maintaining the ecological balance of the Gir region.
With these initiatives, the state continues to reinforce its position as a leader in wildlife conservation, ensuring the long-term survival of its unique and diverse fauna.
