Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Argentina has opened new pathways for India to collaborate in critical minerals, shale gas, defence manufacturing, space technology, digital health and more, marking a pivotal moment in bilateral relations as the two nations aim to deepen strategic ties and expand cooperation across emerging sectors.
During his visit to Buenos Aires, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years, PM Modi held talks with President Javier Milei, reinforcing India’s commitment to strengthen ties with Argentina, particularly in energy and critical minerals to support India’s clean energy goals and industrial growth. The leaders discussed a preferential trade agreement, faster approvals for Indian medicines, and adopting India’s UPI digital payment system in Argentina to enhance trade facilitation.
Strengthening Strategic Partnership and Economic Reform Alignment
President Javier Milei, known for his populist right-wing leadership, has initiated major economic reforms in Argentina, mirroring the path India undertook during its liberalisation. PM Modi highlighted the shared democratic values between the two nations, emphasising that India and Argentina are natural partners with the potential to elevate cooperation to new heights.
India’s technological and industrial advancements, including in defence manufacturing, digital public infrastructure, space technology and telemedicine, were identified as key areas where India can share expertise to support Argentina’s growth. PM Modi noted that India’s telemedicine and digital healthcare capabilities can help Argentina improve access to medical services while ensuring cost-effective healthcare delivery.
India’s commitment to global green energy goals was a significant point in discussions, with Argentina’s rich reserves of lithium, copper, and rare earth elements aligning with India’s need for secure and sustainable supplies of critical minerals essential for its clean energy transition. India’s KABIL, a public sector joint venture, has already secured concessions in Argentina, underlining the practical progress in mineral collaboration between the two nations.
Expanding Energy, Space, and Defence Cooperation
Argentina, which holds the world’s second-largest shale gas and fourth-largest shale oil reserves, along with substantial conventional oil and gas deposits, emerged as a key potential partner for India in energy cooperation. The leaders discussed possibilities for collaboration in shale energy to meet India’s growing energy and industrial demands.
In the space sector, both countries agreed to explore opportunities in satellite development, launch services, space applications, and capacity building. This move is expected to open avenues for India’s space sector to support Argentina’s aspirations in space technology while strengthening bilateral ties.
Defence manufacturing also featured prominently during the discussions, with India offering its expertise to support Argentina in expanding its defence capabilities. India’s advancements in defence manufacturing and technology can contribute to Argentina’s security objectives while enabling technology exchange and co-development initiatives.
The visit also witnessed discussions on expanding cooperation in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food security, green energy, disaster management, education, and science and technology, with an emphasis on people-to-people ties. PM Modi expressed appreciation for Argentina’s solidarity following the Pahalgam terror attack, reinforcing the shared commitment to stand together against terrorism.
Earlier in the visit, PM Modi paid tribute at the statue of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina’s national hero, and visited the iconic Boca Juniors stadium, celebrating the cultural connection through football. PM Modi’s visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Argentina, and five years of their upgraded strategic partnership, underlining the symbolic and practical significance of the trip.
The visit to Argentina forms the third leg of PM Modi’s ongoing five-nation tour, following his engagements in Russia and South Africa, and preceding his travel to Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit and a subsequent state visit to Namibia. The BRICS Summit, notably, will be held without the physical presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, placing India in a key position within the multilateral discussions.
India’s focus on deepening ties with Argentina through this visit aligns with its broader foreign policy objective of diversifying energy and mineral sources while leveraging technology and expertise to strengthen strategic partnerships globally. As both nations look ahead, the discussions and agreements made during PM Modi’s visit are poised to advance cooperation in energy, critical minerals, defence, and technology sectors, paving the way for a stronger, forward-looking partnership between India and Argentina.
