India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate two specially designed Vande Bharat trains running between Katra and Srinagar, marking a milestone in the region’s connectivity. These trains will dramatically reduce travel time by two to three hours and provide reliable, all-weather surface access to the Kashmir Valley. The project, part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), represents a new chapter in linking the remote and mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India, opening up fresh opportunities for economic growth, tourism, and improved livelihoods.
Engineering Marvels and Infrastructure
The 272-kilometer railway line connecting Katra to Srinagar is a feat of engineering, weaving through the challenging terrain of the Himalayas. It features 36 tunnels totaling 119 kilometers and 943 bridges, including the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River and the country’s first cable-stayed bridge at Anji Khad. The line also includes a long tunnel between Khari and Sumber. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 43,780 crore, this fully electrified route addresses the geographic challenges posed by the rugged mountains and harsh winters, ensuring uninterrupted rail service in a region known for its difficult terrain and severe weather.
Tailored Trains for Himalayan Winters
Unlike typical trains, these Vande Bharat trains are specifically designed to operate smoothly in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. Equipped with heated windshields, advanced heating systems, and insulated toilets, they ensure passenger comfort even during the harshest winters. A dedicated snow removal train precedes the service to keep tracks clear throughout the year. Safety measures such as seismic dampers are installed to absorb tremors, providing a safer and more stable ride.
PM Narendra Modi described June 6, the day of the inauguration, as a significant occasion for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Alongside the train launch, infrastructure projects worth Rs 46,000 crore will be inaugurated, highlighting the government’s commitment to the region’s development. PM Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of the USBRL project in promoting spiritual tourism and creating employment opportunities, positioning it as a transformative initiative that connects lives, livelihoods, and landscapes across the Himalayan region.
This launch marks a pivotal step in boosting connectivity and fostering economic and social growth in Jammu and Kashmir, bridging remote areas with India’s national railway network and expanding possibilities for trade and tourism.
