New Delhi [India], October 11 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the ninth G-20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P-20) on Friday at the newly constructed India International Convention and Expo Center (IICC), Yashobhoomi at Dwarka in the national capital, an official statement said on Wednesday.

Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla will also participate in the meeting, the statement added.

Besides Presiding Officers of Parliaments of G20 Nations, Presiding Officers of Parliaments of invited countries will also attend the Summit.

Notably, the President of the Pan African Parliament will be making their inaugural participation in the P-20 Summit hosted in India, as per the official statement.

“Arthur Cesar Pereira de Lira, President of the Chamber of Deputies, Brazil; Speaker of the House Lindsay Hoyle; President of Pan African Union. H. E. Ashebir W Gayo; H.E. Ana Lilia Rivera Rivera, President of the Senate, Mexico; H.E. Kim Jin-pyo, Speaker of the National Assembly, Republic of Korea; H.E. Amos Masondo, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, South Africa. H.E. Shaikh Abdulmalik Abdullah Al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council, Oman, and H.E. Duarte Pacheco, President, IPU have arrived today to attend the Summit”, said the official release.

Meanwhile, H.E. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Speaker of Parliament of Bangladesh arrived on October 10, 2023, it further said.

According to the official statement, adhering to the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, One Future”, the Summit highlights the importance of global unity and cooperation. It emphasizes the idea that our world is one interconnected family and that our collective actions today shape the future for all.

This theme serves as a reminder to parliaments and nations worldwide that addressing global challenges, such as sustainable development, climate change, gender equality and peace, requires collaborative efforts, transcending borders and differences. It embodies the spirit of coming together as a global community to build a better future for everyone, leaving no one behind.

The two-day Summit will deliberate on the following subjects of contemporary relevance:

(i) Agenda 2030 for SDGs: Showcasing Achievements, Accelerating Progress;

(ii) Sustainable Energy Transition Gateway to Green Future;

(iii) Mainstreaming Gender Equality- From Women’s Development to Women-led Development; and

(iv) Transformation in people’s lives through Public Digital Platforms.

“These subjects underscore the immediate imperative of tackling the critical global issues we face today. Together, they encompass a holistic strategy aimed at creating a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable future that benefits everyone”, the official statement said.

The 9th P-20 Summit will be preceded by a Parliamentary Forum on LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) scheduled for October 12, 2023, leading up to the main event on October 13-14, 2023.

The LiFE movement, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2022, is a worldwide endeavour dedicated to advocating sustainable lifestyles and safeguarding our environment, the official statement further said.

The Parliamentary Forum on LiFE will bring together parliamentarians from G-20 nations, along with invited countries and international organizations, to deliberate on strategies for advancing sustainable lifestyles and combating climate change, it added.

This forum holds substantial significance, serving as a platform for parliamentarians to exchange insights and successful approaches to the promotion of sustainable living. Furthermore, it will play a pivotal role in increasing awareness of the LiFE movement and its overarching objectives.

In conjunction with the Summit, an exhibition titled ‘Mother of Democracy’ will be organized, shedding light on India’s ancient and participatory democratic traditions.

At the culmination of the Summit, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will deliver the Valedictory address on October 14, 2023. (ANI)
