Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the urgency of addressing global challenges as he opened the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit. Speaking to an audience of leaders from over 100 countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the critical issues facing the world today, including ongoing conflicts, climate change, and global food and energy security crises. He pointed out that terrorism, extremism, and separatism remain significant threats, and criticized current global governance structures for their inadequacy in tackling 21st-century challenges.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the current global landscape as fraught with uncertainty. “We are meeting at a time when the world is living in uncertainty,” he said. “War-like situations have raised challenges in our developmental journey. We are already facing the challenges of climate change, but we are also worried about health, food, and energy security. Terrorism, extremism, and separatism pose a serious threat to our society. Technology divide and economic and social challenges related to technology are also coming forward. Global governance and financial institutions built in the last decade have proven to be incapable of fighting the challenges faced in this century.”
The summit’s theme, “An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future,” reflects India’s vision for a unified and proactive Global South. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the necessity for unity among these nations, urging them to stand together and support each other. “It is the need of the hour that nations of Global South unite and stand together in one voice and be each other’s strength,” he stated.
During the summit, India’s commitment to integrating the Global South’s priorities into the global agenda was highlighted. Notably, India’s G20 presidency facilitated the historic inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20, a move Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as a significant step toward making global governance more inclusive and development-oriented.
Building on previous summits held in January and November 2023, this edition continued discussions on critical issues such as sustainable energy, human resource development, trade for development, and climate change mitigation. The summit provided a platform for leaders to collaborate on addressing complex challenges and advancing development strategies.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has positioned the Voice of Global South Summit as a key initiative in advancing the collective interests of developing countries. The inputs from these summits have been influential in shaping international discourse, particularly within the G20 framework. As the summit concluded, it reaffirmed India’s role as a leading advocate for the Global South, dedicated to fostering cooperation and inclusive development among nations facing shared challenges.
