Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov announced a significant crackdown on illegal content on the messaging platform, following recent scrutiny and legal challenges. Pavel Durov’s remarks came after his arrest in France on August 24, where he faced charges for failing to control the dissemination of criminal activity through the app. Speaking to his 13 million subscribers on Monday, he disclosed that the platform has intensified its efforts to remove problematic content that has been misused by individuals violating its terms of service, particularly in relation to illegal goods.
In his message, Pavel Durov explained that Telegram’s search feature has been exploited by users to sell illegal items, prompting staff to use artificial intelligence to identify and eliminate such content over the past few weeks. He emphasized that the integrity of the platform, which serves nearly one billion users, is a priority and stated, “We won’t let bad actors jeopardise the integrity of our platform.”
In a bid to bolster user safety, Pavel Durov announced updates to Telegram’s terms of service and privacy policy, which will now include provisions for sharing users’ details, such as IP addresses and phone numbers, with law enforcement in response to valid legal requests. This move signals a shift in the platform’s approach towards compliance with governmental regulations and increased accountability.
Pavel Durov’s arrest stemmed from allegations of negligence regarding extremist and terrorist content on Telegram. Following several days of questioning, he was charged with multiple counts related to these accusations and was released on a hefty bail of five million euros (approximately $5.6 million). During the ongoing investigation, Pavel Durov is required to remain in France and report to police twice weekly.
WhilePavel Durov initially criticized the actions that led to his arrest, he has since taken steps to align Telegram with French authorities’ demands. Notably, on September 6, he announced a modification to the app’s “people nearby” feature, intending to connect users with legitimate businesses instead of bots and scammers. Pavel Durov’s commitment to enhancing moderation on the platform marks a notable shift from prior criticism toward a focus on praise.
Known for his reclusive nature and ascetic lifestyle, Pavel Durov holds Russian, French, and United Arab Emirates passports and boasts an estimated fortune of $15.5 billion, as reported by Forbes. As Telegram navigates these challenges, the tech community and its users will be watching closely to see how these changes affect the platform’s operation and reputation.
