Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh has decided to withdraw from the 800 meters freestyle event at the Olympic trials, potentially strengthening Katie Ledecky’s prospects of clinching her fourth consecutive gold medal in the event at the upcoming Paris Games.
Summer McIntosh, who had previously defeated Katie Ledecky in the 800m event earlier this year, was seen as a formidable challenger for the title in Paris. However, the 17-year-old has chosen not to participate in the 800m race during the Canadian Olympic trials scheduled to be held in Toronto next week.
Although Summer McIntosh will not compete in the 800m freestyle, she remains entered in a diverse range of events at the trials, including the 100m, 200m, and 400m freestyle, as well as the 200m and 400m individual medley (IM), the 100m backstroke, and the 200m butterfly. With her world record in the 400m IM and her prowess in other events, she remains a strong contender for multiple medals at the Paris Games.
Meanwhile, Katie Ledecky, the 7-time Olympic champion and record holder in the 800m freestyle, holds the fastest time in the event this year. Heading into the United States’ Olympic trials next month, Katie Ledecky is poised to vie for her fourth consecutive gold medal in the 800m event, aiming to join Michael Phelps as the only swimmer to achieve this remarkable feat.
The absence of Summer McIntosh from the 800m freestyle competition at the Paris Games could significantly enhance Katie Ledecky’s chances of securing yet another historic victory in her illustrious career.
