For the first time in the history of the Summer Games, India’s contingent gearing up for the Paris Olympics will be accompanied by a sleeping advisor to navigate the challenging environment of the Olympic Village.
Historically, India’s presence in the Olympics dates back to 1900 with a single representative, and the nation made significant strides since, particularly highlighted by a record eight gold medals in hockey and notable individual achievements like Abhinav Bindra’s historic gold in Beijing and Neeraj Chopra’s first-ever track-and-field gold in Tokyo.
Scheduled from July 26 to August 11, the Paris Olympics will host 10,500 athletes from over 200 countries. Recognizing the stress and suboptimal sleeping conditions inherent in the Olympic Village, the Indian contingent has appointed Dr. Monika Sharma, an expert in optimizing sleep for athletes’ performance and recovery.
“The aim essentially is to develop an environment which is sleep conducive,” Dr. Monika Sharma emphasized. “The Olympic Village is a stressful environment, not ideal sleeping conditions. We will support and help the athletes in coping with the challenges and mitigate their consequences,” she added.
Dr. Monika Sharma further disclosed that a specialized travel sleep kit has been curated for Indian athletes, featuring essential items such as sleep masks, travel pillows, and earplugs, aimed at ensuring their comfort and rest amidst the hectic schedule of the Games.
Additionally, concerns have been raised about the weather conditions in Paris, with reports suggesting that the intense heat during July-August 2024 could pose health risks to athletes. The Rings of Fire report cautioned that competitors might face extreme conditions worse than those experienced during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, potentially leading to severe outcomes.
With preparations in full swing and the addition of a dedicated sleeping advisor, the Indian Olympic contingent aims to optimize its performance and provide adequate support to athletes navigating the demanding atmosphere of the Paris Olympics.
