India is gearing up to defend their dream of winning Olympic gold in men’s hockey at the Paris 2024 Games. The team broke a 41-year medal drought by securing a bronze in Tokyo three years ago, igniting hopes of clinching their ninth gold medal in the sport.
Historically, India’s hockey dominance was established during an era when the game was played on grass pitches, often following soccer matches, with neighboring Pakistan also being a formidable force. However, the introduction of fast, flat astroturf surfaces has seen Germany, with three Olympic titles, emerge as a dominant power. Other countries like the Netherlands, Britain, Australia, Argentina, and Belgium, who won gold in Tokyo, have also made their mark.
The World Cup scene mirrors the Olympic trends. Pakistan dominated the early years, but Germany clinched their third title in 2023. For India, the presence of Hardik Singh, the reigning World Player of the Year, adds a significant edge. Singh’s accolade followed consecutive wins by his skipper Manpreet Singh, widely regarded as the best drag flicker in the world.
Manpreet recently noted that the Tokyo bronze reignited India’s faith in their hockey team. Forward Lalit Kumar Upadhyay expressed the team’s clear mission for Paris: “We are looking forward to changing the color of our medal from bronze to gold.”
Upadhyay emphasized the dynamic nature of modern hockey, where any team can win on a given day based on the chances they create. This is reflected in the crowded top 10 of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) rankings, with the Netherlands, England (Britain), Belgium, Australia, Germany, and Argentina ahead of India.
India’s 16-man squad includes five debutants and eight players named Singh. To reach the quarter-finals, they must finish in the top four of their pool, which includes reigning champions Belgium, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland.
Upadhyay stressed the importance of fitness and defensive structure: “We are working on our fitness and defensive structure because we all have the mantra ‘defend for the win.’ India is especially known for our counterattack, so we are looking to defend first. And if you have a good defense, then definitely we can have a good attack.”
The word “hockey” derives from the French word hocquet, meaning ‘shepherd’s crook.’ The July 27 to August 9 tournaments will take place in Colombes, the main stadium for the 1924 Paris Olympics.
In women’s hockey, the Netherlands stands as the dominant force. They won their first title in 1984 and have clinched three of the last four gold medals, including a 3-1 victory over Argentina in Tokyo. The Dutch women have won nine of 15 World Cups and currently top the rankings ahead of Argentina and Germany. However, their 26-game winning streak since June 2023 was broken by Belgium at the FIH Hockey Pro League, marking Belgium’s first victory over their neighbors in a major competition.
Belgium’s Helene Brasseur, named Player of the Match, reflected on the win: “I think certainly in preparation for the Olympics, it’s nice to come here and win the game, so really cool.”
As the Paris Olympics approach, the Indian men’s hockey team remains focused on their goal of turning bronze into gold, drawing inspiration from their rich history and recent successes.
