In the aftermath of a tense night filled with air raid sirens and intercepted drone attacks from Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has rushed to Jammu to assess the volatile ground situation. The ongoing conflict has led to school closures in several parts of the region until Monday, with authorities closely monitoring developments to decide further action.

CM Takes Stock After Night of Drone Threats

Early Friday morning, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced his visit to Jammu via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Driving to Jammu now to take stock of the situation after last night’s failed Pakistani drone attack directed at Jammu city & other parts of the division.” His visit follows a series of drone and missile attacks launched by Pakistan on Thursday night that specifically targeted military installations in Jammu and Pathankot.

The Indian defence forces responded swiftly, successfully neutralising the aerial threats. Explosions and sirens rocked cities like Akhnoor, Samba, Baramulla, and Kupwara, prompting widespread concern among residents. In response to the heightened military tension, the state government had already ordered school closures in several districts on Thursday for two days.

Schools Shut Till Monday, Further Review Pending

The decision to close schools was initiated by Jammu and Kashmir’s Education Minister Sakina Itoo. As tensions remain high, Chief Minister Abdullah stated that the government will revisit the school closure decision on Monday afternoon. “The situation at the time will determine if the closure is extended or not & if extended, for how long,” he added in another X post.

Residents in affected areas spent the night under the shadow of constant sirens and sporadic blasts as Indian forces intercepted multiple threats. The Defence Ministry reassured citizens, stating that India is fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and protect its people from any hostile actions.

Amid the ongoing developments, security remains on high alert across sensitive areas in Jammu and Kashmir. The situation continues to evolve, and state authorities remain engaged in real-time assessments to ensure safety and order for the population.
