Fulfilling a key electoral promise, Odisha’s newly sworn-in BJP government has reopened all four gates of the revered Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri. The decision, ratified during its inaugural Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, marks a significant policy shift from the former administration’s practice of keeping three gates closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who assumed office on Wednesday, announced the reopening of the temple gates during a ceremonial ‘Mangala aarti’ on Thursday morning. He was joined by MLAs and prominent leaders including Puri MP Sambit Patra and Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi.
The move was welcomed enthusiastically by devotees who had voiced concerns over restricted access and long queues at the remaining open gate, Singhadwara. The decision to open all gates aims to facilitate smoother darshan of the Holy Trinity for pilgrims.
In addition to reopening the gates, the Cabinet also approved the creation of a substantial corpus fund dedicated to the conservation and maintenance of the Jagannath Temple, a landmark decision aimed at preserving the cultural and spiritual heritage of the revered site.
Under the previous BJD-led government of Naveen Patnaik, stringent measures were implemented including the closure of all gates except one, citing pandemic safety protocols. The reopening of all gates signifies a shift in policy under the new BJP administration, focusing on easing pilgrim access and enhancing temple management initiatives.
The Odisha BJP government’s proactive steps at the Jagannath Temple are expected to garner continued support from the local community and devotees, reinforcing its commitment to fulfilling electoral promises and promoting cultural heritage preservation.
