Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has issued a strong call to the United States and the United Kingdom, urging them to exercise restraint and prevent further escalation of the security situation in the region. The minister’s message comes in the wake of the exacerbated tensions in the Middle East amid Israel’s oppression in Palestine in wake of the October 7 attack. .
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Amirabdollahian revealed that he had conveyed a critical message to his British counterpart, David Cameron, during a meeting held last month in Switzerland. He emphasized that the current crisis in the region does not have a military solution and warned against the potential consequences of escalating the situation.
Amirabdollahian stated, “[You] do not [want to] test the wrath of the region. We consider the security of Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Palestine (Gaza and the West Bank) to be the security of the entire region.”
It is pertinent to note that the Iranian Foreign Minister’s message follows a series of military actions taken by the US and the UK in the region. Notably, these actions have included numerous strikes on Yemen, undertaken with the aim of pressuring the Iran backed militias group to cease targeting commercial ships operating in regional waters. The militias group have said they are targeting the ships to voice in their support against the Israeli regime.
Additionally, just two days prior to Amirabdollahian’s message, the United States has also launched a series of attacks on targets within Iraq and Syria. These strikes were in retaliation for a fatal attack last month on one of its military outposts in Jordan, killing three US personnel and further exacerbating regional tensions.
On the US military strikes, the Iranian Foreign Ministry in a statement said, “the United States’ military attacks on Iraq, Syria and Yemen simply ensure the Zionist regime’s interests. Such strikes embroil the U.S. government in the region more than ever before and overshadow the Zionist regime’s crimes in Gaza.”
“As the Islamic Republic of Iran has announced time and again, tensions and crises in the region are rooted in the Israeli regime’s occupation and perpetuation of this regime’s military operations in Gaza and the genocide against Palestinians with unlimited support from the United States, and that stability and security cannot be restored to the region without focusing on the root cause of the crisis and its settlement,” the Foreign Ministry added.
