In a key development, the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar secured victory in today’s trust vote in the Assembly. Nitish Kumar garnered support from 129 MLAs, surpassing the expected 128. Surprisingly, three RJD MLAs—Chetan Anand, Prahlad Yadav, and Neelam Devi—backed Nitish, signaling a shift in the alliances. Before the ‘Trust Vote’ the no-confidence motion was introduced against RJD Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary. This motion witnessed the support of 125 MLAs and voting Awadh Bihari out from the position of Speaker. Support of 125 MLAs indicated that the subsequent vote of confidence for Nitish Kumar was a just a formality.
In January of this year, Nitish Kumar made a significant political move by breaking away from the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar and the national coalition. Instead, he formed a new government with the backing of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Ending speculations about his political future and the fate of Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, Nitish resigned as the chief minister on January 28. This marked his second political reversal in less than 18 months, and after aligning with the BJP, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the 9th time.
