Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, now serving as the Leader of Opposition, has announced the formation of a 50-member shadow cabinet designed to scrutinize and counter the ruling BJP government led by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi. This strategic move, set against the backdrop of the upcoming budget session of the state assembly, aims to hold the government accountable and propose alternative policies.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s shadow cabinet, inspired by the UK’s political system, primarily consists of former ministers from his government. These members will be responsible for monitoring specific government departments, preparing counter-strategies, and ensuring the BJP’s administration is rigorously challenged. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik emphasized the role of the opposition as a guardian of public interests, stressing that MLAs will actively participate in discussions and oversight of the government’s performance.
This development signifies Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s commitment to a proactive opposition role and dispels any notions of political irrelevance following the BJD’s recent electoral defeat. After losing power in the state elections, where the BJP secured 78 of the 147 assembly seats compared to the BJD’s 51, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s appointment as Leader of the Opposition marks a determined shift towards holding the BJP accountable.
In addition to their state-level strategy, the BJD has also indicated its readiness to confront the central government, particularly on issues such as NEET and other matters affecting Odisha. The party’s MPs are poised not only to debate but also to mobilize protests if the BJP-led government fails to address Odisha’s concerns effectively.
