United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday banning transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports, marking his latest move targeting transgender rights since returning to office. Surrounded by dozens of children and female athletes at the White House, Donald Trump declared, “With this executive order, the war on women’s sports is over.” The move was met with applause from conservative lawmakers and allies, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who were present for the signing ceremony.
Donald Trump emphasized that the order aims to protect the integrity of women’s sports by preventing what he called unfair competition from transgender athletes. “We will defend the proud tradition of female athletes, and we will not allow men to beat up, injure, and cheat our women and our girls. From now on, women’s sports will be only for women,” he stated. The executive order grants government agencies the authority to withdraw federal funds from schools that allow transgender athletes to compete on women’s teams. According to the order, “It is the policy of the United States to rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, which results in the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of women and girls and deprives them of privacy.”
Beyond the domestic policy changes, Donald Trump announced his intent to pressure the International Olympic Committee to revise its transgender participation rules before the Olympic Games return to the United States in 2028 in Los Angeles. He stated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been directed to “make it clear” to the International Olympic Committee that the United States expects a change in regulations on transgender athletes. In addition, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has been ordered to deny visa applications for individuals Donald Trump claims are “fraudulently identifying as women athletes” to compete in the Olympics.
Since his second inauguration on January 20, Donald Trump has taken a series of actions against gender non-conforming individuals as part of his broader conservative agenda. He has already signed an executive order banning transgender troops from the military, describing his policy as an effort to rid the armed forces of “transgender ideology.” Another order restricted gender transition procedures for individuals under the age of 19.
His latest executive order follows a similar measure passed by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives in January, which sought to impose strict limits on transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports. Throughout his 2024 election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly attacked transgender rights, framing the issue as part of a larger cultural battle. He often criticized his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, for her past support of transgender rights, using the slogan, “Kamala Harris is for they/them. Donald Trump is for you.” He also targeted her previous backing of gender reassignment procedures for incarcerated individuals.
As transgender rights remain a divisive topic in the United States, many conservatives have increasingly rallied around women’s sports as a focal point in their campaign against gender identity policies. Donald Trump’s latest move further cements his administration’s stance on the issue, ensuring that transgender participation in women’s sports remains a highly debated subject in American politics.
