In a controversial statement, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has accused the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government of using animal fat and substandard ingredients in the preparation of the famous Tirupati laddoo, a sacred offering at the Sri Venkateswara temple in Tirumala. Speaking at the NDA legislature party meeting in Amravati, N Chandrababu Naidu claimed that during YSRCP’s tenure, animal fat was used in place of pure ghee in the laddoo, compromising its quality and the sanctity of the temple’s offerings.
N Chandrababu Naidu went on to assert that since his administration took charge, pure ghee is now being used and that the temple operations have been sanitised, ensuring the use of high-quality ingredients for the laddoo. His comments have sparked a significant political row, with Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh also echoing his concerns, accusing the Jagan Mohan Reddy government of tarnishing the religious integrity of the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple at Tirumala. Lokesh expressed his shock on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that the misuse of animal fat in the preparation of Tirupati Prasadam was an insult to the temple and devotees.
However, the allegations have been met with strong denials from YSR Congress Party leaders. The ruling party has dismissed N Chandrababu Naidu’s claims as politically motivated and malicious. YSRCP leader and Rajya Sabha member Subba Reddy, a former chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), condemned N Chandrababu Naidu’s comments, accusing him of spreading misinformation for political gain. Reddy stated that N Chandrababu Naidu’s remarks not only undermined the sanctity of the Tirumala temple but also hurt the sentiments of millions of Hindus who revere the Tirupati laddoo as a sacred offering.
Subba Reddy challenged N Chandrababu Naidu to prove his allegations, even going as far as to suggest taking an oath before the deity at the Tirumala temple to reaffirm the faith of devotees. He questioned whether N Chandrababu Naidu would be willing to do the same to back up his claims. Reddy further emphasised that the YSRCP government has always maintained the highest standards in the preparation of the laddoo and that the accusations were baseless and aimed at damaging the party’s reputation.
This controversy comes amid heightened political tensions in Andhra Pradesh, with both the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSR Congress engaging in a war of words ahead of upcoming elections. N Chandrababu Naidu’s comments have added fuel to the fire, with both parties using the sensitive issue of temple offerings to rally public support. The Tirupati laddoo, a symbol of religious faith, has now become the focal point of a political battle, with both sides attempting to claim the moral high ground in the eyes of the state’s electorate.
As the debate continues, the faith of millions of devotees in the purity of the Tirupati laddoo remains at the forefront, while the political implications of these allegations are likely to play out in the coming months. N Chandrababu Naidu’s claims have sparked widespread reactions, with religious groups and political leaders weighing in on the matter, further intensifying the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh.
