Leishiyo Keishing, an MLA representing Phungyar (ST) Assembly Constituency in Manipur, has penned a letter to Chief Minister N Biren Singh, urging action to address the escalating issue of Myanmar refugees in the state.
In the letter dated May 9, Leishiyo Keishing expressed concerns about the threats posed by the influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar, with over 5,800 individuals reportedly entering Manipur since November 2023. Leishiyo Keishing highlighted the capture of biometric data for 5,173 persons under the supervision of district administration.
Leishiyo Keishing emphasized instances of violence against local residents over disputes related to wages and domestic matters, exacerbating law enforcement challenges in border areas. He noted the difficulty in exerting control over the refugees due to their adherence to customs and beliefs, which often clash with local customary laws.
The MLA raised alarms regarding safety and security, citing incidents of killings and kidnappings allegedly perpetrated by immigrants who evade apprehension by crossing the border into Myanmar.
Leishiyo Keishing urged urgent measures from the Chief Minister to devise a plan for the deportation of refugees to their respective villages in Myanmar or to find suitable shelter under strict supervision. He cautioned against granting Indian citizenship to the refugees, citing historical precedents from 1968, and called for the strengthening of armed police presence in border areas.
