A dramatic rescue unfolded on Friday evening on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, also known as Atal Setu, as a woman attempted to jump off the bridge. The incident was captured on CCTV, showcasing the quick and coordinated efforts of a cab driver and police officers who managed to save her from plunging into the sea below.
The woman, identified as 56-year-old Reema Mukesh Patel, a resident of Mulund, was seen sitting on the edge of the bridge’s safety barrier in the footage. With a determined demeanor, she tossed an unknown object into the turbulent waters before attempting to leap from the bridge.
In a heart-stopping moment, a cab driver intervened, grabbing Patel just as she was about to jump. Simultaneously, a police patrolling vehicle arrived at the scene, with officers Lalit Shirshat, Kiran Matre, Yash Sonavane, and Mayur Patil joining forces with the driver to pull Patel back to safety. The collaborative efforts of the rescuers prevented a potentially tragic outcome.
According to a police official, “After the police were alerted about her presence, a patrolling vehicle rushed to the spot. When the police approached her, she lost her balance and was on the verge of falling into the sea. But the cab driver and traffic police personnel managed to hold her just in time and pull her back.” The official added that Patel panicked upon seeing the police and lost her balance.
The woman, a homemaker, is currently under investigation by the Nhava Sheva police, who are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are working to understand the reasons behind Patel’s distress and attempt to jump from the bridge.
