MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, has given his most direct hint yet that his IPL career may be nearing its end. Following CSK’s narrow two-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Wednesday, MS Dhoni shared that he would only decide on his future in the IPL after evaluating his physical condition over the next 6 to 8 months. At 43, MS Dhoni acknowledged that he is in the “last phase” of his career and would continue pushing himself to see if his body could handle the intensity of the league.

In a candid statement, MS Dhoni admitted that after this IPL season, he would assess his fitness to determine if he could continue playing in the league. “There is no escaping the fact that I am in the last phase of my career,” said MS Dhoni. He further mentioned that after the IPL concludes, he would work hard for another 6-8 months to evaluate whether his body could sustain the pressures of the game. Despite the uncertainty regarding his future, MS Dhoni expressed immense gratitude for the love and support he has received from his fans.

Fitness Concerns and CSK’s Changing Focus

MS Dhoni’s fitness has been under the microscope this season, especially after undergoing knee surgery last year. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter has been managing his game time carefully, often coming in for short, impactful innings at the death. CSK’s coach, Stephen Fleming, earlier acknowledged that MS Dhoni couldn’t play full 10-over innings, which has led to him focusing on shorter bursts with the bat. This approach has helped MS Dhoni preserve his energy, but it also highlights the challenges that come with his waning fitness.

CSK, who have already been eliminated from the playoffs race, have shifted their focus towards evaluating their future squad options. MS Dhoni remarked that while there were several factors that didn’t go their way this season, it was crucial for the team to remain practical and focus on building a competitive team for the future. He also mentioned that with the team now out of the tournament, it was important to give younger players opportunities to prove themselves, testing their mental toughness and adaptability in challenging situations.
