History

Born as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia, Mother Teresa felt a calling to serve God from a young age. At 18, she joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland. By 1929, she was in India, where she took her solemn vows and began her lifelong commitment to the poor.

While teaching at the Loreto convent in Kolkata, she felt a “call within a call” to serve the destitute and sick outside the convent walls. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, which has since grown into an international organization serving the needy in over 130 countries.

In recognition of her miraculous deeds and unwavering faith, she was beatified in 2003 and canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta by Pope Francis in 2016.
