Mohammed Siraj’s spirited six-wicket haul against England at Edgbaston has earned glowing praise from cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who highlighted the pacer’s growth in accuracy and consistency, particularly in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. Stepping up when questions circled his place in the team, Mohammed Siraj’s performance was a statement of grit, helping India reclaim control in the Test despite a strong England fightback.

Mohammed Siraj Steps Up in Bumrah’s Absence
Heading into the match, Mohammed Siraj was under scrutiny after a modest performance at Leeds, with some questioning whether he should retain his place in the XI. However, the 31-year-old silenced his critics with a display of disciplined seam bowling on a flat Edgbaston pitch, using the new ball effectively and troubling English batters with his precision.

His efforts were crucial as England threatened to take the game away through a mammoth 303-run partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith. The duo counterattacked under pressure, with Brook scoring 158 and Smith remaining unbeaten on 184, steering England closer to India’s first-innings total than expected.

Yet, with the second new ball in hand, Mohammed Siraj showcased composure and skill, dismissing Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir in quick succession to end England’s innings at 407. His six-wicket haul ensured India secured a healthy 180-run lead at a vital juncture, shifting momentum back in their favour.

Tendulkar’s Praise and the Path Ahead
Taking to X, Tendulkar lauded Mohammed Siraj’s growth, stating, “The biggest change I’ve noticed in Mohammed Siraj has been his accuracy and consistency in landing the ball in the right areas. His persistence has been rewarded with 6 wickets. Very ably supported by Akash Deep as well. Well done!”

Tendulkar also acknowledged the fighting spirit of Brook and Smith, appreciating how they counterattacked under pressure to bring England back into the contest, calling their effort a “special partnership.”

As the day ended under overcast skies, India extended their lead to 244 runs, closing Day 3 at 64/1 in their second innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the sole casualty in the evening session after a brisk 28, while KL Rahul (28*) and Karun Nair (7*) remained unbeaten at stumps, positioning India to dictate terms with two full days remaining.

With Bumrah absent, Mohammed Siraj’s ability to lead the pace attack with maturity and consistency has emerged as a positive for India, reflecting the team’s depth in fast bowling. His performance at Edgbaston is not only a personal milestone, with his first five-wicket haul in England, but also a reminder of the value of persistence, as Tendulkar emphasised, in converting good spells into match-defining contributions.

India now looks poised for a series-levelling win, leveraging the strong foundation laid by Mohammed Siraj’s incisive bowling and the batters’ steady contributions, setting the stage for a compelling finish in the Test.
