Microsoft is preparing for the upcoming launch of Copilot+ PCs next week, but has announced a delay in rolling out the Recall feature, citing the need for additional security testing with the Windows Insider program.
Initially scheduled for release alongside the new devices on June 18, 2024, Recall has been postponed to ensure it meets stringent quality and security standards. Microsoft stated that they are adjusting the release model to leverage feedback from the Windows Insider community.
The Recall feature is designed to track every file, document, and website visited on the laptop, allowing AI assistants to access and recall user activities. This capability has sparked considerable controversy and concerns over privacy and security, likened by critics to an episode of “Black Mirror.”
According to Microsoft, Recall will only be supported on Copilot+ PCs and not on current Windows 11 systems. It requires a minimum of 256 GB of hard drive space, with 50 GB available for storage, and stores snapshots of user activities locally on the device.
Addressing privacy concerns, Microsoft assures users that the Recall index remains private and on-device. Users have control to pause, stop, delete captured content, or exclude specific apps and websites from tracking. Notably, Recall respects privacy by not capturing InPrivate web browsing sessions in Microsoft Edge or DRM-protected content.
Despite these assurances, the decision to delay Recall suggests ongoing challenges in balancing functionality with user privacy and security. Microsoft aims to refine the feature further before its eventual release.
The upcoming launch of Copilot+ PCs underscores Microsoft’s commitment to integrating advanced AI capabilities while navigating complex concerns around data privacy and security in today’s digital landscape.
