The mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan, the only city in the United States with an all-Muslim government, has officially endorsed former President Donald Trump for the upcoming presidential election in November. Amer Ghalib, who has led the city since its historic election of an all-Muslim City Council and mayor in 2021, made the announcement on social media, describing Donald Trump as a “man of principles” and “the right choice” for the current political climate, despite acknowledging their differences on various issues.
In a Facebook post, Amer Ghalib expressed his belief in Donald Trump’s leadership, stating, “President Donald Trump and I may not agree on everything, but I know he is a man of principles.” He added, “Though it’s looking good, he may or may not win the election and be the 47th president of the United States, but I believe he is the right choice for this critical time. I’ll not regret my decision no matter what the outcome would be, and I’m ready to face the consequences.” Amer Ghalib concluded his message with the phrase, “Now, let the Caravan begin its journey. This is just the starting point.”
Following the endorsement, Donald Trump shared Amer Ghalib’s statement on his Truth Social platform, emphasizing the significance of the endorsement from a city that represents a unique political landscape. Hamtramck, with a population of approximately 28,000, has gained attention for its progressive political representation.
Amer Ghalib, who immigrated to the U.S. from Yemen at 17, met Trump prior to a town hall event in Flint, Michigan, where they discussed issues affecting Arab and Muslim Americans. Donald Trump reportedly requested Ghalib’s endorsement during this meeting.
Michigan is seen as a pivotal battleground state that could sway the outcome of the election. Current opinion polls indicate a competitive race between Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. The latest average compiled by The New York Times shows Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump in Michigan by 50 percent to 47 percent. Donald Trump previously won Michigan in 2016, marking the first Republican victory in the state since George H.W. Bush in 1988, but President Joe Biden flipped the state back to the Democrats in 2020.
ThePresident Joe Biden administration’s support for Israel amid the ongoing Gaza conflict has sparked discontent among Muslim Americans, presenting a challenge for Democrats in this crucial swing state. Recent polling reveals that only 12 percent of Muslim voters in Michigan support Kamala Harris, while 18 percent back Donald Trump, and 40 percent favor Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Additionally, a grassroots campaign, the Uncommitted National Movement, has decided not to endorse Kamala Harris, reflecting the growing frustration among Muslim communities regarding the Democratic Party’s stance.
