Mayank Yadav, the young pace sensation who made waves in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, has been notably absent from competitive cricket since the tournament ended. Despite his impressive debut, which saw him deliver the fastest balls of the season and claim crucial wickets, Mayank Yadav has not played any matches since. Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey believes that instead of sheltering Mayank Yadav from playing, he should be encouraged to bowl regularly to build resilience and skill.
Mhambrey, who spoke to The Indian Express, emphasized that Mayank Yadav should not be kept in “cotton wool” but should instead focus on enhancing his bowling abilities through consistent practice. At just 22 years old, Mayank Yadav showed remarkable potential during the IPL. He consistently exceeded speeds of 150 kmph, including a peak of 156.7 kmph, making him one of the fastest bowlers of the season. His performance included a standout debut match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and a continued strong showing against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Mhambrey stressed the importance of first-class cricket in developing Mayank Yadav’s bowling skills. “A bowler should bowl. The more you bowl, the more control you will gain and understand your physical limits,” he stated. He argued that avoiding overuse while ensuring proper workload management is key, but Mayank Yadav should not be overprotected. Playing first-class cricket will help Mayank Yadav build his bowling muscles and adapt to the demands of fast bowling.
The former bowling coach highlighted that the immediate focus should be on Mayank Yadav’s performance over the next few years rather than long-term planning. Mhambrey believes that the next three to four years will be critical for Mayank Mayank Yadav’s development. By the time Yadav reaches his mid-twenties, he will have a better understanding of his body and be better equipped for international cricket. Mhambrey is keen to see how Mayank Yadav performs in the short term and how he adapts to the challenges of domestic and international cricket.
Mayank Yadav is training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, having opted out of the Delhi Premier League to focus on his development. As he continues his preparation, the cricketing community eagerly awaits his return to the field and hopes he will fulfill the promise he demonstrated during his debut IPL season.
