Masik Kalashtami, also known as Kala Ashtami, is a monthly Hindu observance dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi (8th day) during the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) of every lunar month, it is a deeply revered occasion among devotees of Lord Shiva.
Among the twelve Kalashtami days in a year, the one falling in the month of Margashirsha is the most significant and is celebrated as Kalabhairav Jayanti. Additionally, when Kalashtami coincides with a Sunday or Tuesday—days associated with Lord Bhairav—it is considered especially auspicious.

Rituals and Observances
Kalashtami holds special significance for devotees of Lord Shiva, particularly those who worship His fierce form, Kaal Bhairav. The day is marked by strict fasting, dedicated prayers, and spiritual discipline:

Early Morning Rituals: Devotees wake up before sunrise and take a holy bath. Special pujas are performed to honor Lord Bhairav, seeking his blessings and forgiveness for past sins.

Temple Visits: In the evening, followers visit Lord Bhairav temples and offer prayers, milk, curd, and sweets.

Ancestor Worship: Rituals for departed souls are also performed in the morning, as the day is considered spiritually potent for pitru tarpan (ancestral offerings).

Spiritual Significance of Kalashtami
The Aditya Purana highlights the significance of Kalashtami and the divine essence of Lord Kaal Bhairav. The term Kaal refers to “time,” while Bhairav means “the terrifying form of Shiva.” Hence, Kaal Bhairav is regarded as the God of Time, who governs over creation, preservation, and destruction.
According to legend, Lord Shiva assumed the fierce form of Mahakaleshwar and severed the fifth head of Lord Brahma after a celestial dispute. From that moment, this form came to be worshipped as Kaal Bhairav, the protector and punisher, ensuring cosmic balance.
It is widely believed that worshipping Lord Kaal Bhairav on Kalashtami removes suffering, fear, obstacles, and negative energies from one’s life, leading to a path of righteousness and spiritual growth.
