M C Mary Kom, the six-time world champion boxer, has formally stepped down from her role as India’s chef-de-mission for the upcoming Paris Olympics. Her decision, communicated to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha via a letter, is attributed to personal reasons.
In her communication, Mary Kom expressed her deep sense of honor in serving her country in any capacity possible. However, she regretfully stated her inability to continue in the role, citing personal circumstances. Despite her eagerness to fulfill the prestigious responsibility, she highlighted her lack of choice in the matter.
Acknowledging the significance of her decision, Mary Kom assured her unwavering support for the Indian contingent and its athletes participating in the Olympic Games. The IOA had announced her appointment on March 21, entrusting her with the logistical responsibilities for the country’s delegation during the July 26-August 11 Games.
Reacting to Mary Kom’s resignation, PT Usha expressed sadness over her departure, respecting her privacy and decision. She assured that suitable consultations would be made to identify a replacement for the esteemed boxer.
Following Mary Kom’s withdrawal, the IOA has appointed Shiva Keshavan, a six-time Winter Olympian and luger, as the deputy chef-de-mission. Additionally, veteran table tennis player and reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Sharath Kamal, has been designated as India’s male flag-bearer. The selection of a female flag-bearer is pending, considering the ongoing qualification process for various events.
India has witnessed the qualification of more than 40 athletes across different disciplines for the Paris Games, aiming to surpass its previous Olympics tally of seven medals, including one gold.
