Rabat, 13 September : A large number of people who attended a marriage ceremony in Ighil Ntalghoumt village in Morocco survived when the powerful earthquake struck it devastating the homes of the villagers on September 8. More than 2,900 people died so far.
Wedding Ceremony Provides Shelter in Morocco Earthquake
All the villagers of Ntalghoumt had gone out to attend a marriage ceremony. The traditional dance and music were being enjoyed on the eve of the marriage of Mohammad Boudad (30) and Habiba Ajdir (22). The marriage was to take place at Baoudad’s village Kettou on September Saturday (Sep 9). The bride’s party had organised a party a night before the marriage. The celebrations turned into screams of people as the powerful earthquake struck the region.
Baudad’s father erected a tent in the courtyard of his house for the guests who had gathered to attend the marriage ceremony. Baudad was helping the quake-affected in the wedding coat that he had put on the fateful night. The marriage pandal provided shelter to the people of the village.
Ighil Ntalghoumt is a small village of a total population of about 400, out of which 68 died. A majority of the villagers were saved as all the houses of the village turned into rubble.
