A 44-year-old man lost his life in a tragic accident on Sunday night when his car plunged into a drain in the Burari area of north Delhi, police reported on Monday. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. near a metro pillar on Ring Road.
According to the police, the vehicle was speeding from the Bhalaswa Dairy side when it veered off course and fell into a temporary diversion leading to the drain. Emergency services, including a PCR van, fire tenders, and divers from the east district’s disaster management team, were quickly deployed to the scene. Within 20 minutes, the car was located approximately 100 meters from the initial crash site.
The car, registered under the name of Shalimar Bagh resident Rajesh Bhutt, was eventually retrieved from the drain using a JCB machine. Despite initial efforts, Bhutt’s body was not immediately recovered. It was only on Monday morning that a team of divers managed to locate and recover Bhutt’s body from the drain.
Initial investigations revealed that Bhutt, who worked at a transport company, had been on a joy ride alone when the accident occurred. The police suspect the accident was caused by rash and negligent driving. An eyewitness account and preliminary findings led to the registration of a case under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic accident.
