Following the Trinamool Congress’s victory in 29 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, with the Bharatiya Janata Party securing 12 and the Congress one, concerns arise over TMC’s performance in urban areas. The BJP led in 69 out of 121 municipalities statewide and held sway in 44 wards out of Kolkata’s 144.
In response, TMC chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has scheduled a review meeting with municipal leaders on June 24. The upcoming civic elections in 2023 prompt this evaluation, given the recent electoral outcomes in urban regions.
While Mamata Banerjee’s Lakshmir Bhandar scheme garnered rural support, it faced challenges in urban sectors. Acknowledging this, TMC leaders, including Mamata Banerjee and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, have initiated a review process.
Mamata Banerjee recently conferred with Kolkata’s mayor and state municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim to discuss urban issues and issued directives for immediate action, according to sources.
The TMC chief is anticipated to engage in extensive discussions during Monday’s meeting with municipal heads to address concerns and strategize for upcoming challenges, a party official revealed.
Sources within TMC highlighted issues such as misconduct among councillors, factional disputes, and inadequate implementation of government schemes as contributing factors to the urban electoral setbacks.
