World Cancer Day, observed every year on February 4, serves as an important occasion to raise awareness about cancer, its prevention, early detection, and treatment. This year, as the world reflects on the importance of combating cancer, India’s Ayushman Bharat Yojana stands out as a transformative initiative in the fight against cancer. Launched in 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the scheme has made significant strides in providing life-saving medical treatments, including cancer care, to low-income families across the nation.
Ayushman Bharat is a public health insurance scheme that offers free access to health coverage for the bottom 50% of India’s population, with a focus on ensuring that the poorest citizens receive essential healthcare services. The scheme was later extended to senior citizens above the age of 70, regardless of their economic background. Its broad scope has helped millions of families who otherwise would have struggled with the high costs of healthcare, particularly in the treatment of life-threatening diseases like cancer.
In the state of Uttar Pradesh, Islam Ali, a resident of Bhadohi, shared the profound impact the Ayushman Bharat Yojana has had on his family. His wife, Afsari Begum, has been undergoing chemotherapy at the Tata Hospital in Mumbai for the past six to seven months. The entire treatment, including five chemotherapy sessions, has been covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, significantly easing their financial burden. Islam Ali expressed gratitude for the scheme, saying, “With the help of the Ayushman card, we have received much-needed medical support. The financial aid has been a game-changer for us.”
Similarly, Anil Kumar Sharma, a resident of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, was diagnosed with throat cancer 18 months ago. Initially devastated by the news, Anil found hope through the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. The scheme enabled him to receive timely treatment, including essential medicines, free of cost, which has alleviated the financial strain cancer treatment usually entails. Anil shared, “My morale was initially very low, but under the Ayushman Yojana, I received the treatment I desperately needed. Now, I feel about 50% better, and this scheme has given me a new lease on life.”
Alka Sharma, Anil’s sister, recounted their journey before enrolling in the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. She explained how they initially sought treatment at private hospitals where costs soared to around Rs 3 lakh, but there was no relief. Once they obtained the Ayushman card, they experienced immediate financial relief, allowing Anil to begin his chemotherapy. “The Ayushman card has made all the difference. It activated quickly, and we started his treatment without further delay.”
Another example comes from Radha Agarwal, a resident of Ahmedabad who was diagnosed with cancer in June 2024. Initially treated at a private hospital, she switched to a government hospital under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, where she is receiving better treatment facilities. Similarly, Mahesh Chaurasia from Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, shared that his wife Poonam’s breast cancer treatment at the Tata Hospital in Mumbai has been fully supported by the Ayushman Card, which has been a crucial factor in reducing the family’s financial burden.
The widespread impact of Ayushman Bharat is further illustrated by the story of 73-year-old Makhbooba Bano, a resident of Ahmedabad, who has been receiving treatment for stomach cancer under the scheme for the past five months. Makhbooba’s family began treatment promptly upon diagnosis, and with the support of the Ayushman card, she is receiving quality care at a government hospital.
One of the most heartwarming stories is that of Siraj Mohammad Hanif Barfwala from Ahmedabad, who successfully overcame blood cancer, with the financial aid provided by Ayushman Bharat. Siraj’s battle with the disease was challenging, but the coverage under the scheme significantly alleviated the financial burden, allowing him to receive the necessary treatment in time. Today, he is completely healthy, and his recovery is a testament to the life-saving potential of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
The Ayushman Bharat Yojana has proven to be a beacon of hope for countless families, providing them with access to crucial medical care for serious diseases like cancer. By removing the financial barriers to healthcare, the scheme ensures that millions of Indians, irrespective of their socio-economic status, can receive the medical treatment they need to survive and thrive. On World Cancer Day, as the world continues to raise awareness about cancer, Ayushman Bharat stands as a vital tool in improving the quality of life for patients and giving them a fighting chance against this devastating disease.
